Ensuring safe and enjoying firework experiences for everyone

Every July 4th, thousands of people, especially children and teens, get injured while using consumer fireworks. Despite the dangers, many people don’t fully understand the risks, such as severe burns, injuries, fires, and even death.

Fireworks fire & injury facts

In 2022, fireworks were responsible for an estimated 31,302 fires, including 3,504 structure fires, 887 vehicle fires, 26,492 outdoor fires, and 418 unclassified fires. These fires led to six civilian deaths, 44 injuries, and $109 million in property damage. (Note: Total may not match the sum due to rounding.)

U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated approximately 10,200 people for fireworks-related injuries in 2022. Over half of these injuries affected the extremities (29% to hands and fingers, 19% to legs, 5% to arms), and 35% were to the eyes or head.

Children under 15 made up 28% of the estimated injuries in 2022. These statistics come from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2022 Fireworks Annual Report.
